Chapter Twelve

The court always enjoyed the month of May at Greenwich. The dowager duchess of Glenkirk had taken a house on the river for that time so that her granddaughters would have beds in which to lay their heads on the rare occasions they returned home to her. With the longer days, the court seemed more and more intent on having its pleasures. Fancy had been the reigning maitress en titre for the first half of the month, but then Mistress Nell arrived from London, which had served Fancy’s purposes as she was now with the king’s child and planning to retire from the court sometime in June.

I will be glad to get back to Queen’s Malvern, Jasmine thought. I am too old to be traipsing about like this with a trio of nubile young girls in tow. Fancy will be settled soon with her child. The king, being generous, will provide for her, but I am here to advise her in that matter. And my sweet Diana. Here Jasmine smiled. Where had the child ever inherited such an amiable character? And Cynara. Here the dowager duchess frowned. Of all her flock of grandchildren, Cynara was the most like her as she had been in her youth. Willful. Headstrong. And inclined to make foolish decisions, particularly where a certain gentleman was concerned. I cannot stop her though, Jasmine thought sadly. She will make her mistakes. She will be hurt. Her parents will be furious. But I will be here for her. I will do whatever I can, whatever I must to see this dearest-to-my-heart grandchild happy.

“Grandmama?” Diana came into the small riverside garden. “Why do you look so unhappy? Are you all right?”

Jasmine put the dark images from her and looked up smiling at her granddaughter. “Sometimes old women have sad thoughts, my dear child. Seeing you, however, brings the joy back into my heart. How pretty you look, Diana. What plans do you have for today?”

“‘Tis another picnic, Grandmama,” Diana responded, sounding just a trifle bored. “At least this time it will not be held at the palace but rather out somewhere in the country. A suitable meadow has been discovered. The farmer was paid to move his cattle for the day. The meadow has been thoroughly scoured for cowpats. Even
